Social Interaction, Verbal, And Nonverbal Communication

One in eighty-eight (88) children have been identified with autism in United States, roughly 30 percent higher than the previous estimates reported in 2012 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). In addition, of the many different characteristics of people who are autistic, some of these are the non-verbal type. In this particular type of autism, children are mute and can only make sounds to communicate. These children have particular difficulty acquiring expressive communication skills (Schlosser Wendt, 2008), and they have difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication (Sicile-Kira, 2004). Research suggests children who have few verbal skills must be taught to communicate their wants and concerns to promote their cognitive and social development and to prevent behavior problems from emerging and in order to increase the possibilities of any language development in their future (Thompson, 2007). According to the study of Charlop-Christy, Le, and Kellet (2002), non-verbal children learn from tasks presented in a structured concrete format more easily than abstract (spoken language formats).
